The old three-span railway flyover obstructed the drainage of the river during periods of high water on the river Iller because of blockages at the river piers. In order to avoid this in the future and to improve drainage during high water, the bridge was renovated as a steel truss bridge without intermediate piers. The new raised abutments are supported on large piles and protected by surrounding sheet pile boxes, which also secure the excavation and provide protection during high water. Due to the low construction height, the roadway slab was designed with tightly-spaced cross beams and closed box girders. All hollow cross-sections were welded airtight.
